"for the PEOPLE, not a party"

About Gary

I am a life-long Virginia resident, born and raised in Waynesboro. I attended Virginia Tech, graduating in 1988. After leaving Blacksburg, I went straight to law school at the College of William & Mary, obtaining my J.D. in 1991.

I moved to Chesterfield County almost 20 years ago. Our family now lives in a subdivision off Robious Road at the Chesterfield-Powhatan line.

My professional career as an attorney has been based entirely in Chesterfield County. In April 1996, I joined the Chesterfield law firm of Kalbaugh, Pfund & Messersmith and I am a partner there. I am also a member of 901 Moorefield, LLC, a group that owns the old Eskimo Pie Building in Moorefield Park.

My practice focuses on insurance defense, coverage and insurance fraud investigation. For the past thirteen years, I have served as General Counsel to the Virginia International Association of Special Investigation Units, an organization devoted to combating insurance fraud. As part of my work with this organization, I provide training to the insurance industry, arson investigators and the Virginia State Police. The local chapter just gave me a Distinguished Service Award of which I am very proud to have received.

My wife, Tammy, is a distance runner and has completed two half marathons to date. She spends a great deal of time volunteering at our children’s schools, Bettie Weaver Elementary and Robious Middle. She works closely with the PTA and has held several committee chair positions. She recently completed volunteer training for Camp Comfort, a bereavement camp for children and young adults. Tammy was also Superintendent of Church School at St. Matthias Episcopal in Midlothian for 5 years and she continues to teach Sunday School there.

We have two children, Claudia, 11 and Alex, 9, who keep us very busy. I enjoy coaching my son’s baseball teams and have since 2005. Besides coaching Alex's "regular season" baseball team, I am an assistant coach for Huguenot Little League's 9U travel team, the Trailblazers. Coaching Upward Basketball fills the time between fall and spring baseball.

On Saturday mornings this fall, you can find us on the field at the Clover Hill Complex watching Claudia play field hockey and occasionally sneaking out of work a little early to watch her ride horses at Fox Meade Farm.

I enjoy playing tennis, softball and working out at Robious Sports and Fitness during my spare time. I am an avid Hokie sports fan and I also look forward to the return of minor league baseball to the Richmond area.
